Chrismation

In Anointing with Chrism [a person] receives grace, which vouch safes spiritual renewal and strengthens.
St Philaret, metropolitan of Moscow.

Chrismation is a Sacrament, in which the believer - in having certain parts of his or her body anointed with consecrated chrism in the name of the Holy Spirit - is given gifts of the Holy Spirit to strengthen and to develop in spiritual life.

The Sacrament of Chrismation imparts to the newly-christened grace filled strength for spiritual growth and for the sanctification of his or her mind, feelings and will by the Holy Spirit. The Sacrament of Chrismation with chrism is applied in the form of a cross on the forehead, eyes, nostrils, mouth, ears, chest, hands and feet. Chrism oil consists of many fragrant ingredients and the consecration of it is reserved by the bishops. The anointing is accompanied with the words by the priest: «The seal of the gift of the Hoy Spirit,» and the one who is being christened and if it is a child the God-parents respond with «Amen.» This symbolises that the person receiving the Sacrament of Christening had become joined on to God and His church. "Now He which stablishes us with you is Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given us the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts". (2 Cor.1: 21, 22).
